On Wednesday, we went to Westwood Nature Center where the kids enjoyed exploring, watching a puppet show, making apple cider, and appreciating nature. We learned about how apples grow, what happens in fall, and although it felt like winter, they were very excited about what they learned about fall!
We used apples in math this week to work on classification, sorting, and making a graph. The kids created a class graph about which type of apple - red, green, or yellow - they liked the best. Other activities in math included creating patterns, writing numbers, recognizing and naming numbers out of order, and 5-groups.
We had a lesson with Sra. Moore this week, and we learned all about a new superhero - Mighty Upstander. The kids have been developing a strong basis for what are expected social skills and strategies to use throughout their school careers and their lives outside of school. Mighty Upstander helps remind you to stand up for others, to lead with kindness, and to be inclusive.
We also had another lesson with Súper María about identity. The objectives of the lesson were that all kids develop a positive racial identity, to appreciate the diversity of skin tones within our classroom, and to normalize conversations about skin color. The kids were so engaged in the lesson, and together we made a beautiful piece of art with all of our different skin tones. Súper María will return in the future to continue the great conversations.

STEP (St. Louis Park Emergency Program) caters to families in need in our community. The 5th Grade Leadership Team is organizing a food drive this month to help support our community. There will be a donation box in our classroom. Please send non-perishable and household items with your child if you can support this drive. Here is a list of things that STEP is always in need of. Please check the expiration date on anything before you donate it. Thank you for your generosity!
