This week, we practiced counting and recognizing numbers 1-10, counting to 20, we practiced making groups and graphs, and we distinguished between things that are different or the same. We focused on the vowels, differentiating between uppercase and lowercase letters, recognizing letters in the alphabet that are out of order, writing the ABCs, and Tucker signing.
Several special things happened this week as well. Super María, my equity coach, came to teach a lesson about identity. She read the book The Color of Us (Karen Katz) to talk about how unique, beautiful and precious each person is. We talked about how we have physical characteristics that are part of us (our skin, our hair, our bodies, our gender, our clothing choice etc.), so we should be proud of them! We also talked about what we love about ourselves and how to love others for who they are. The kids then drew self portraits, focusing on creating accurate depictions of themselves.
In art, we created self portraits to hang up in our classroom, and we learned how to draw a teddy bear. We had another lesson with Sra. Gregor, the social worker, about the zones of regulation. Ask your kids about how important it is to be in the green zone! During our Makerspace time, we built lego bridges over "water." I was so impressed with the kids' creativity, teamwork, and flexible thinking! We ended the week with a story with Sra. Wieber's class and talleres.
