In order to build some knowledge before our field trip to Westwood Hills Nature Center, we have been talking about apples all week. One major project we completed included painting paper red, yellow, or green, tracing an apple, adding a stem and a leaf, and the writing adjectives about their paper apple. They turned out really cute, and our class is now full of apple experts. =]
We also used apples in math this week to work on classification, sorting, and making a graph. The kids created a class graph about which type of apple - red, green, or yellow - they liked the best. Other activities in math included grouping, breaking down numbers into 5-groups (7 is 5 and 2; 6 is 5 and 1), counting to 30, writing numbers, and working with shapes.
For our weekly nature walk, the kids were given a sheet of fall colors, and they had to find objects outside that matched those colors. They brought back lots of leaves for our classroom science table! Anne Moore also came to our room this week to teach a lesson about problem solving and being good friends.
On Friday, Sra. Wieber's class joined ours, to start what will become a weekly tradition - Talleres (Workshops). The idea behind Tallers is to provide our kids with the opportunity to participate in real life experiences that they may not have had and that they will enjoy. This will range from cooking to building snow forts to art projects, and more! This week, the kids were able to choose between three choices: cooking with apples, raking, jumping, and playing in leaves, and drawing with chalk outside. We had a wonderful time!
