(Some students have asked if they can bring in 100 toys to play with. We will not be playing with the 100 collections, only looking at them. Students should, in general, leave their toys at home.)
Cubo and cilíndro were two words we practiced by drawing them. We have also been practicing other shape names: círculo, cuadrado, rectángulo, triángulo, óvalo, and estrella.
More new vocabulary this past week:
cerrar (to close) cinco (five)
cebra (a zebra) cincuenta (fifty)
cerdo (a pig) cien (100)
centros (centers0 círculo (circle)
The first lessons in our new math books deal with 10-pairs (5 + 5, 6+ 4 , 3 + 7, etc.). We played "A pescar", a variation of "Go Fish" where you need to find pairs that equal 10. Playing this at home would help your child learn the pairs. Knowing which combinations of numbers equal 10 is a fundamental math skill.
We had fun listening to our hearts during a writing lesson. We used stethoscopes to listen to our heartbeats while sitting still and then after jumping/dancing/running for one minute. It was fun to watch your children's expressions as they heard the changes in their heartbeats. We then wrote about what we do to make our hearts beat faster: run, jump, dance, play, swim, skate, ... (Yo corro, yo salto, yo bailo, yo juego, yo nado, yo patino, ...).
Congratulations Eddie and Evelyn!
As part of an effort to encourage students to speak Spanish, the Student Leadership Team has been recognizing students who try to speak a lot of Spanish. This week, Eddie and Evelyn were recognized for their efforts!
Next week, we will begin a favorite unit of most students, the Materials Around Us unit. The students (and the teachers!) love this hands-on unit focusing on wood and paper. We will fold, measure, float, observe, predict, design, sculpt, and more as we incorporate science, math, art, music, and communication skills into our lessons.
To help get us started, we do need some donations of different types of paper and small pieces of wood. Please see the letter below for more details. Thanks!

Presenters will share information about their job/career at stations. Kinder-5th grade classes will have a set time to come visit the various career stations. We would love presenters that represent many different career fields!
