Students added words with "ch" and "h" to their growing vocabularies this week. I am hearing some students speaking in full sentences in Spanish - that's fabulous!
Ch words include:
chocolate (chocolate) el chivo (the goat) la chaqueta (the jacket)
el chico (the boy) la chica (the girl) chiquito (pequeño)
el coche (the car) la leche (the milk) ocho (8)
Hh words include:
el helado (ice cream) hola (hello) la hoja (leaf)
el hombre (man) hermana (sister) hermano (brother)
As is expected after reading your child's first report card, you may have some questions. The district uses a four-letter scale to share information with you about your child's progress.
E - Your child's work is above and beyond what we expect at the end of kindergarten.
S - Your child's work is what we expect at the end of kindergarten, i.e. at grade level.
P - Your child is progressing toward what we expect at the end of kindergarten.
N - Your child is not progressing at the rate he/she needs to be to meet the end-of-
kindergarten goals.
Because it is January, and there is still much to be learned in kindergarten, most students have a report card filled with P's -- they are progressing toward the end-of-year goals. If your child has N's on their report card, those are areas of concern, especially in writing the ABC's, identifying letters and sounds, or math. Your child will be receiving extra help from me and María Reyes (Super María) with letter/ sound recognition and numbers 1-20. Extra practice at home, in Spanish or English, is helpful.
During the first semester, our reading focus was on identifying letters/sounds and syllables. We did not focus specifically on reading sight words--we will do that this semester! That being said, if your child received an N in reads grade-level sight words, applies knowledge of letter sounds in writing, or opinion piece, do not panic! Most students got an N because we have just begun to work on those skills. I will notify you if your child does not progress in these areas as we practice more.

We will hold a friendship party next Friday afternoon. Students are welcome to bring Valentine cards for their classmates; there are 23 students in the class. It is best to have your child sign the cards, but not address them. Many of the children can't yet read their classmates' names, so delivering them to specific friends would be difficult.
We will also do an art project, enjoy a snack, and play a game or two. Parents are welcome to join us!
