What beautiful weather we have this weekend! I believe in looking for the silver lining in situations. Despite finding that I spend as much or more time on schoolwork than I usually do, I still find that the pace of life in my house has slowed. My family sits and talks longer at the dinner table, my kids take time to play jokes on each other, and I get to read the whole newspaper on Sundays (admittedly, it is a bit thinner than usual). I hope that you, too, are able to find some silver linings in the current situation, whether that be more snuggles with your kids, fewer minutes in your car during rush hour, or time to try a recipe you've always wanted to prepare. I am a reader. An avid reader. My kids just shook their heads last night when I proudly told them that I'd already read 8 novels during the past 33 days of shelter-in-place. I've also been doing crossword puzzles. What can I say? I love words! I love the fact that any emotion can be created with a mere 26 letters (27 in Spanish, or other alphabets). That a reader can travel anywhere in the world or in history or learn about anything in our universe by decoding lines on a page amazes me. Consequently, I love sharing the gift of reading with children. The last five weeks have confirmed for me that teaching children to read through a computer screen is far from ideal. I miss sitting next to your kiddos! I miss guiding their fingers along a line of text! I miss celebrating reading successes with them! Some tips for making our short onllne sessions as successful as possible:
Proyectos y Noticias Keep some boxes! One of our favorite parts of the science unit that we were doing in March is the sculpture project. We had even planned to hold an exhibit and reception to celebrate the young sculptors during our spring party! Students love building and creating, and our classrooms always buzz with excitement and energy on building day. As teachers, we have decided to have students do the project at home. We will post more details in Seesaw later this week, but in the meantime, saving a box or two and the newspaper might be helpful. Noticias, arte y proyectos |
