It was such a treat to see the kids during the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday chats! Thank you for joining in when you were able. Later this week I will send instructions for the next phase of distance learning, which begins on April 6. Hang in there! We'll be in touch next week. In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine and some non-screen time! Whew! What a whirlwind week! We kicked off the week by learning about astronaut Mae Jemison with Sra. Vandewalker. I shared photos of a former student of mine who now works for NASA. On Wednesday, we attended the annual career fair, organized by Sra. Moore. The kids were able to talk to fire fighters, a scientist, and a game designer, among others. We featured the Pinkney family of authors and illustrators this week during both read alouds and art. The kids all created a scratch art piece modeled after Brian Pinkney's illustrations. We ended the week with a fun interactive drumming story called Max Found Two Sticks, also by Brian Pinkney. In our study of paper and wood, we focused on wood. Our first investigation of the week was to see if certain types of wood absorbed water. Later in the week we discovered that wood floats -- even big pieces of wood! We tried out a few other items too: a plastic toy, paper, a key, and a pencil. Test out some items at home - which float and which sink? New vocabulary this week: flotar - to float hundirse - to sink absorbar - to absorb pollito - a chick una galleta - a cookie llamar - to call la lluvia - rain llover - to rain llorar - to cry la llave - a key una toalla - a towel llevar - to carry As part of the Carnival fundraiser, our PSI Parents/PTO hosts an online auction. To bid on items, follow this link. Items range from restaurant gift cards to SLP gear to sporting tickets, and much more! The auction will be open from March 7 - March 19. As part of the Paper & Wood unit, we experimented with different types of papers to see which is the best for writing. Later in the week, we did another experiment to determine which papers are best for absorbing water. We also watched a video about paper recycling. Next week, we will begin exploring different types of wood. This week was Spirit Week, and the kids were very excited about it! They enjoyed the assembly on Monday and had a lot of fun dressing up on each day. We continued to work on addition, breaking numbers apart, making 10, and skip counting in math. New vocabulary for the letter "ll": llorar - to cry la lluvia - the rain la llave - the key llamar - to call la galleta - cookie la gallina - the chicken llevar - to take or carry llover - to rain As part of the Carnival fundraiser, our PSI Parents/PTO hosts an online auction.
