We added some new language arts activities to our morning rotations. Students had fun assembling the syllable puzzles, spelling words with the Bananogram letters, and reading the new big books. Some kids also played a new syllable game that is a variation of the card game Uno. It was a hit, and others will play it next week.
We explored books written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin. They write some of our favorite stories. We read several of their books, watched a video, and learned to draw Pato and Vaca. We made a live Venn diagram before making our own diagrams on paper, and a few lucky kids got to wear some fun ears and beaks. Sra. Lindsey and I had a great time reading Dubi Dubi Muu on Friday afternoon; it's one of our favorite read alouds!
"Después de la Qq, siempre viene la Uu."
el queso - cheese quince - fifteen ¿Quién? - Who? ¿Qué? - What? ¿Qué es? - What is it?
te quiero - I love you. quiero - I want
tú quieres - you want ellos quieren - they want
Our favorite book of the week is called "¿Qué?" Each page shows a bit of the hidden drawing that is revealed when the page flap is lifted. It had the kids guessing!
As is expected after reading your child's first report card, you may have some questions. The district uses a four-letter scale to share information with you about your child's progress.
E - Your child's work is above and beyond what we expect at the end of kindergarten.
S - Your child's work is what we expect at the end of kindergarten, i.e. at grade level.
P - Your child is progressing toward what we expect at the end of kindergarten.
N - Your child is not progressing at the rate he/she needs to be to meet the end-of-
kindergarten goals.
Because it is January, and there is still much to be learned in kindergarten, many students have a report card filled with P's -- they are progressing toward the end-of-year goals. If your child has N's on their report card, those are areas of concern, especially in writing the ABC's, identifying letters and sounds, or math. Your child has been receiving and will continuing to receive extra help from me with letter/sound recognition and numbers 1-20. Extra practice at home, in Spanish or English, is helpful. That being said, if your child received an N in reads grade-level sight words, do not worry! We have only just begun to work on that skill.
Feel free to contact me with any questions: [email protected], or call me at 952-928-6524. We will also discuss the report cards during conferences.
Please check the snack calendar. If you missed your day recently, please send a non-perishable snack next week. Thanks!
