We are working on identifying the initial sounds of words. It is essential that kids have phonemic awareness (can hear and differentiate between sounds) as we start reading. We did an art activity this week with the first sound of their names, and the kids did a great job thinking of and drawing words that begin with the same letter as their names. The students also successfully wrote their names using both upper and lower case letters. The tricky part is convincing them to always write their names that way!
On Tuesday, Súper María came to teach a lesson about race. The objectives of the lesson were that all kids develop a positive racial identity, to appreciate the diversity of skin tones within our classroom, and to normalize conversations about skin color. The kids were so engaged in the lesson, and together we made a beautiful piece of art with all of our different skin tones.
We had another lesson with Sra. Moore and we learned all about the Unthinkable Blurt Out Blue. Blurt Out Blue is a character that causes people to interrupt others. We frequently use SuperFlex, Space Invader, Glassman, and Rock Brain to remind the kids about expected behaviors.
This week's favorite book is about a red dragon -- Mi dragón y yo by David Biedrzycki.
Join us at school for an evening of math games and puzzles! Last year's event included counting games, puzzles, brain teasers, contests, and a giant chess board. Come and play!
