During the past two weeks we worked through an engineering unit that was developed by the SLP High School science department. The kids learned to differentiate between man-made and natural objects, and to talk about animals' and plants' needs. Those lessons were the base used to plan, design, and then to build a miniature farm. The kids worked with their peers at their tables to design a farm that meets both animals' and plants' needs. They worked well together, and they have enjoyed watching their seeds grow.
We made flip books and secret clue books about animals. By doing so, we practiced writing and reading simple sentences. This week, each child will choose an animal and begin to write their "cartonera" book. What is a cartonera? Translated quite literally, a cartonera is a cardboard book. Cartoneras got their start in Argentina in 2003 as a way to make reading and writing accessible to all. Click HERE for more information about the Cartonera Project. Every child at PSI will write, illustrate, and publish a book for our June book celebration.
We have been working on subtraction in math, as well as shapes and identification of teen numbers. We mixed primary colors to create secondary colors in our final art project of the year with Sra. Bruns.

Everyone is welcome!
Every year, we’re lucky to welcome Amity Interns from Spanish-speaking countries into PSI’s K-5 classrooms. During their time at PSI, Amities live with two different PSI host families - one for the fall semester and one for the spring.
Please consider hosting an Amity Intern next fall semester. This is a unique and wonderful chance to welcome an Amity into your family, and a great way to give back to the PSI community!
