There are so many things happening in DLA right now!
Students' math skills are improving quickly! It is a pleasure to listen to them explain their thinking about math. We have been focusing on addition, including adding one or two more, adding tens, and missing addends.
We have completed several experiments to learn about the characteristics of paper - which paper is best for writing, for folding, for soaking up liquids? Students made some creative origami. Next week we will do a few lessons with cardboard and wood. Please add a couple of boxes (from pasta, crackers, butter, Amazon, etc.) to the paper collection.
The first graders are learning about Costa Rica. After flying to this small Central American country, we learned about the volcanoes and beaches there. We have also talked about foods and the flag. We will learn about animals and the rain forest next week.
We combined lines and music to create beautiful art projects on Friday. After listening to the individual instruments heard in Peter and the Wolf, students drew lines to represent the music they heard. We then painted in between the lines to create colorful artwork.
New vocabulary this week included words with the letter Ññ:
la piña - the pineapple la piñata - the piñata la niña - the girl
el niño - the boy el baño - the bathroom el cumpleaños - birthday
la uña - fingernail

In preparation for spring conferences, I will be meeting with each student to do one-on-one assessments this week. Because of this, the 12:30 and 1:00 math groups will not meet on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please see the schedule below to see when your child should log on to meet with me for 15-30 minutes. If this time won't work for you, please let me know asap. Thanks!
Due to a high number of absences on school photo day, there will be a photo retake day on Wednesday, April 7, from 8:00-12:00. Sign up here if you would like to have your child's photo taken or retaken.
