Many of our April lessons centered around animals. Kindergarten students are learning the names and characteristics of the animals in Spanish. Kids in both grade levels are expanding their skills in both speaking and writing about animals. We will continue to increase their vocabularies and hone writing skills as we work toward publishing books at the end of May. Next week, we will talk about wild animals, and during the following week, we will learn about farm animals.
I am so impressed with the math skills that I am seeing during our zoom classes. I have been pushing the kids to explain their thinking around math, and they have been doing just that. Both grade levels focused on addition and subtraction in the past month. Strategies that we have used to solve problems include: drawings, using a number line, making groups of 10, doubles, breaking apart numbers, making connections to other number facts, and skip counting.
In May, first graders will finish their number scrolls to 1000 - congratulations! They will also be adding coins to $1.00 and will have lessons related to telling time.
Kindergarteners will start writing numbers to 100 soon. They will continue strengthening their addition and subtraction skills, and will create patterns and learn about symmetry.
In this week's slideshow you will see art projects from the past few weeks. Flexibility has been key during art lessons, as your children create with the materials they have available to them at home. Art lessons are some of my favorites to teach, and I love to see what kids create. Enjoy the art gallery.

Gale Woods Farm Tours One of the highlights of kindergarten in the past few years has been our trip to Gale Woods Farm. Unfortunately, we won't be visiting the animals there this year. They are currently offering $5.00 farm tours. Scroll down on this site to register. |
