We have completed a full month of Distance Learning Academy, and the students have settled into the routines of zoom class. Thank you for helping them to connect at their scheduled times. Thank you also for helping your children to complete Seesaw assignments. Those activities provide opportunities to practice the concepts we work with during the zoom classes. The schedule will remain the same in March.
This week we learned about the 5 senses: la vista, el gusto, el oído, el olfato, el tacto. We will continue to work with vocabulary related to the 5 senses next week. First graders reviewed and read words with the letters b and v while reading "La leched de la vaca Viki." Kindergarten students learned words that begin with the letter Gg. New words:
el gato - cat la galleta - cookie la gallina - chicken
el gallo - rooster el guante - glove el gorro - cap
las gafas - eyeglasses la gente - people el girasol - sunflower
Our math focus for much of February has been addition strategies. In March, we will continue to work with addition and subtraction. Depending on the grade level, students will practice adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers, finding missing addends, forming groups of 10's, decomposing numbers, and recognizing groups of items.
Next week, we will begin a favorite unit of most students, the Materials Around Us unit. The students (and the teachers!) love this hands-on unit focusing on paper, cardboard, and wood. We will fold, draw, float, observe, predict, design, sculpt, and more as we incorporate science, math, art, music, and communication skills into our lessons.
Your child will need different types of paper (newspaper, wrapping paper, waxed paper, paper towel, notebook paper, etc.) and cardboard (cereal box, cracker box, etc.) Small pieces of wood (blocks, popsicle sticks, etc.) will also come in handy, but are not necessary. I highly suggest storing these materials in a box that your child can easily access. We will be using them throughout the month.
