Our second full week was a busy one! The kids are starting to get to know each other and are becoming more comfortable with their new classmates. We had some interesting conversations, and even told jokes at the beginning of one zoom class!
The letter we focused on this week was Cc. In the syllables "ce" and "ci", the letter "c" makes an /s/ sound when paired with "e" or "i". We compared this with "ca, co, cu" when the "c" makes a /k/ sound. Cubo and cilíndro were two words we practiced by drawing them.
More new vocabulary this past week:
ciencias (science) cinco (five) cebra (a zebra)
cincuenta (fifty) cerdo (a pig) cien (100)
cepillo (a brush) cerca (near) circo (circus) círculo (a circle) cama (a bed) caballo (horse)
castillo (castle) cola (a tail) cocodrilo (crocodile)
casa (a house) cantar (to sing) contar (to count)
correr (to run) comer (to eat) cortar (to cut)
cuchara (a spoon) cubo (a cube) cuadrado (a square)
Math topics included tens and ones (decenas y unidades), addition strategies, teen numbers, open equations, and the February calendar. We are establishing math routines that will help all students develop and strengthen their number sense skills.
We explored books written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin. They write some of our favorite stories. We read several of their books, watched a video, and compared the stories. I had fun reading Dubi Dubi Muu on Friday morning; it's one of my favorite read-alouds!

We also learned about two women that have helped other in our country. The first is Ruby Bridges. Ruby was just six years old when she was the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana in November of 1960. Ruby Bridges now works as an educator and civil rights activist.
