Our first complete week of Distance Learning Academy was filled with activity and some growing pains. There were many successes and a lot of learning and laughter. It also became apparent that some changes need to be made to the schedule. I'll be combining some of our lessons so your children will only have 4 zoom classes each day. The biggest change is that our morning meeting will now be at 9:00 a.m. each day. Here is the new February schedule. I will send you your child's individual schedule.
Many of our lessons this week were based on "El mitón" and "La gorra de lana", two books written by Jan Brett.
We compared the two stories and wrote about the animal characters.
We also practiced using the phrase "Me gusta" correctly when both speaking and writing. We started a daily activity with rhyming words. First graders reviewed words with "ch" and "h", and the kindergarten students learned new words that begin with those sounds.
New words include:
el helado - ice cream la hoja - the leaf el helicóptero - the helicopter hola - "hi" los huevos - the eggs el hueso - the bone
el chocolate - chocolate el chicle - chewing gum el chaleco - the vest
el chivo - goat chico y chica - boy and girl

Students shared their math skills in topics that ranged from teen numbers and addition to place value and odd and even numbers. Seesaw activities included online addition games and writing the numbers.
We ended the week with a science experiment that involved predicting which of four ice cubes would melt the most. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of our experiment! Each of the ice cubes was placed in a different situation inside a glass jar:
1. wrapped in a cloth
2. placed in a zip-loc bag
3. wrapped in newspaper
4. unwrapped inside the jar.
After one hour, ice cube #4 melted the most and ice cube #3 melted the least.
